About GOED

GOED is a 501(c)(6) not-for-profit trade association focused on growing the markets for EPA and DHA products.

We were founded in 2006 as GO3ETA, Inc., but do business as the Global Organization for EPA and DHA Omega-3s (GOED).  The roots of GOED go back to 2000 when the industry collaborated to petition the US Food and Drug Administration to establish a heart disease risk reduction claim for omega-3s.  The companies involved later formalized the relationship by forming the Omega-3 Working Group at the Council for Responsible Nutrition and collaborating again to develop what is now known as the GOED Voluntary Monograph.  In 2006, when the Working Group was dissolved, twelve of the companies banded together to found GOED with a strong mandate to grow our membership to represent all sections of the EPA and DHA market.

Our Mission

To support GOED members who are committed to responsibly developing, sustaining and expanding markets for EPA & DHA Omega-3s, while promoting health benefits, supporting public education and safety, establishing ethical business and product quality standards, and advancing government, healthcare and industry relations.

How We Work

GOED is a member-driven organization.  We have a board of directors comprised of Leadership Level members and four active sub-committees: Communications, Regulatory, Scientific and Technical.  The board and our committees are responsible for advancing GOED's mission.  In addition, GOED's staff works with the committees to execute on our strategy.

Our Accomplishments and Recognition

GOED is still a young organization, but we have been able to make significant progress towards our goals.  We have played significant roles in:

  • Revising European hygiene regulations that would have banned the import of fish oils into the EU in 2006
  • Submitting and working with the European Commission on the establishment of Article 13 triglyceride and blood pressure maintenance claims
  • Working with the EU to make an Article 14 children's health claim on visual acuity workable for the industry
  • Making recommendations to the European Commission and European Food Safety Agency on nutrition claims and intake recommendations for EPA and DHA
  • Petitioning the Institute of Medicine to establish clearer Dietary Reference Intakes for EPA and DHA in the US and Canada
  • Working with Indonesian authorities to implement new quality standards for the use of DHA oils in infant formulas
  • Establishing the International Omega-3 Learning Consortium at Purdue University
